Is my iPod beyond help?

My iPod (old model-the first one that had a colour screen and could hold videos) now only plays music through one earphone, no matter what set I use. It still works with a docking system, but it's getting tedious and annoying only being able to hear music in one ear otherwise. Also the battery only lasts about a day now. Can anything be done to fix it? Or should I resign myself to it's untimely demise?
